What is the difference? | Why have my numbers changed so much?
You may wonder why we have changed our statitics program. Please read the following for a basic explanation for the change in software and the resulting change in statistics.
In October of 2005 BuildingOnline decided to make an update to the software we were using for processing your web statistics. In our search to improve upon our existing solution we found AWStats. AWStats, like other web statitics programs uses its own unique method for generating the statistics. BuildingOnline feels that AWStats reflects most accurartly the true numbers and here ares some reasons why:
- Some visitors use a lot of proxy servers to surf (ie: AOL users), this means it's possible that several hosts (with several IP addresses) are used to reach your site for only one visitor (ie: one proxy server download the page and 2 other servers download all images). Because of this, if stats of unique visitors are made on "Hits", 3 users are reported but it's wrong. So AWStats considers only HTML pages to count unique visitors. This decrease the error (not totally, because it's always possible that a proxy server download one HTML frame and another one download another frame).
- Unique visitors in AWStats are just that, unique visitors for the time period. If a certain user, whose IP address does not change, visits your site every day from January 10th - January 20th they are only counted as one user. Although it is impossible to get 100% accuracy for unique visitors because of Dynamic IP Addresses and Proxy Servers, AWStats attempts to correct for this through a series of tests.
- If a user visits your homepage and clicks on a link that takes them to another page on your site we log two page hits: 1 page hit is for the initial homepage hit and one hit is for the link the user has clicked on. This is the same for all statistical reporting software. Where AWStats differs is if that same user now clicks a link back to the homepage. AWStats realizes that the user has already viewed the homepage and so will not log the second hit as a page hit. If the user (now back on the homepage) clicks on the same link as the first time and is taken to the same page viewed already, again AWStats will not count the page hit. With AWStats the most pages/visit a person can possibly have is equal to the total number of pages on your site. With other stats software you can have more pages visited than are on your site and that doesn't really make sense.
- AWStats is an active opensource program that is continually worked on and updated. A new version is expected for release in early 2006.
- Graphical representations are much easier to read and make it possible to see trends. More information and definition of terms available in the glossary
